Youth 2000 Christmas Retreat in Newbridge

Our Irish students were involved in the Youth 2000 retreat, in Newbridge, last Christmas. The video below, created by the Irish Province, show highlights of this wonderful event.

  1. I have to say I am rather bemused by this video. Doubtless it as it suggests that the young people present were well meaning and that they were moved, but the footage of various liturgies left me wondering if I was watching a catholic liturgy or some pentecostal freeform make it up as you go along.

I was especially disturbed the footage of a lady speaking, colloquially to say the least, beside what APPEARS to be a monstrance atop a frame of lighted candles. It the monstrance did indeed hold the Blessed Sacrament, this would be scandalous.

    I hope I'm wrong.

  3. Dear Bernard, I take your point, but I do seem to recall something about wearing the appropriate wedding garment, and it is a feast - a formal act of worship to which I refer, not a jamboree.

  4. well, dear Peter, thanks for your response. I think we should be gentle and tell people they are all welcome with whatever wedding garment they want to wear. The important thing is that they come to the feast and not get waylaid into the less important mundanities. I prefer my trainers and fleece but am happy with those who want to wear a tuxedo.

    Kind regards

  5. Bernard, my reference to the garment is meant as an analogy for the conduct of the liturgy not the physical garb of the faithful assisting.

  6. thanks Peter. I think we do faith a disservice by moving too rapidly to analogy. Makes it too easily a club for the cognescenti- I write as one of the riff raff.

    best wishes

  8. Who knows? Some of these people may well come back to the church through an event like this.
